Growing Goldenseal

I’m interested in ordering some goldenseal root stock. I need to know more about their required environment, so I can be sure to provide them a good place to grow.

Goldenseal needs much the same conditions as ginseng: about 70% shade, relatively cool temperatures, below 25 degrees Celsius, and a rich, well-drained soil. Goldenseal does not do well in hot, humid environments. We find, for instance, that we cannot keep goldenseal plants in the greenhouse past May when the temperatures often reach 30 degrees Celsius. Apart from these requirements, goldenseal is surprisingly easy to grow. Few pests and diseases seem to bother it.

For more information, there are three chapters devoted to goldenseal cultivation in Harding’s book, "Ginseng and Other Medicinal Plants" (available from Richters).
