Scented Geraniums: Can Broken Branches Be Used for Propagation?
Answered by: Inge Poot
Question from: Heather Fabro

I purchased mixed scented geranium seed from your company in 1995 and have (had) two lovely plants. They are growing in large pots and are outdoors year round. Recently they were badly broken during a wind storm. Is it possible to propagate the broken branches? Rooting hormones are not available where I live.

Rooting hormones help in the rooting, by speeding it up, but they are not essential. Our book "Growing Herbs from Seed, Cutting & Root" (B4280) explains the method in great detail. Take about ten centimeter tip cuttings from your broken branches, cut them just below a leaf node, trim off all but two to three top leaves, leave to callous over for about twelve hours, insert into a pot of sterile soil, water, allow to drain, put into a clean plastic bag or pop a glass over the cutting and place the pot in a light but not sunny spot. Remove the cover when the cutting has started to grow.
