Hops During Winter

I received four varieties of your hop plants here at Denman Island, British Columbia, Canada in the fall of 1998. I was just wondering if these little guys are just dormant for the winter, or if they have deceased. There is no living foliage anymore, and there has not been any for about three months. I am continuing to water them sparingly, and am hoping to see them perk up in the spring. Is this to be expected?

Hops are deciduous and are therefore expected to lose their foliage during the winter. Make sure the plants get some frost, otherwise they may not start into growth in the spring. They do not grow in areas warmer than zone 8 and you will have to keep that in mind when overwintering them. Since they like a rather moist soil, do not let them get too dry. Let us know if they do not come up by late spring.
