Hops Pruning

I have a second year vine. Do we cut in back, and if so, how far?

Do hops flowers grow on new, or last year’s wood?

Hops plants come in two varieties. Female plants produce cone-like flowers that are harvested for making beer and medications. Male plants produce tiny male flowers in branched clusters that are not used for beer making. Male plants make nice vines, but nothing more.

The plants are cut down to ground level at harvest time in late summer. The flowers are produced on the new growth.
