Potatoes in a Barrel

My husband and I live at Wilmot Creek, Newcastle, Ontario. And plan to visit your gardens this spring. Having looked at your web page (excellent site) I am interested to know if I could grow potatoes in a barrel. I read somewhere, or was told that it can be done. Your organic potatoes interest us.

To grow potatoes or other root crops in a barrel, make sure you use well draining rich soil and be sure to remember that the plants will dry out faster there than in the soil. It might also be a good idea to place some leafy potted plant in front of the barrel on the sunny side to prevent too high a temperature in the root zone of the plants in the barrel -- especially since most barrels are a dark colour and therefore absorb heat readily.
