Shallots – When to Plant?

Got my order of subject shallots and am wondering if these have to be planted before winter, or can we as we do with other shallots plant them in the early spring as soon as the ground can be worked? If so, where is the best place to keep them until planting? If stored in the fridge, would they act as garlic does and start sprouting premature? Thank you very much.

It is best to plant this fall rather than wait for next spring. This is true for all areas of USDA Zone 4 or higher. In colder areas, it is better to wait until the spring because winter-hardiness is an issue when planted this late in the fall (mid October). To store, put the shallots in an onion bag (or any bag made of netting) and hang in a cool, dark location such as a cool cellar.
