Bergamot in Winnipeg

I am looking for something to fill in among my rose bushes which border the vegetable garden. Is bergamot an annual or perennial? And the really big question, will it grow in Winnipeg?

The common bergamot varieties are hardy in southern Manitoba. In fact, the outstanding dwarf varieties, ‘Petite Delight’ and ‘Petite Wonder’ were developed in Manitoba at one of Agriculture Canada’s research stations where they are overwintered in fields.

Most of the bergamot varieties are perennial, but lemon bergamot (Monarda citriodora) is annual.
