Chamomile Lawn

I wish to create a lawn, possibly with chamomile. Could you advise as to what type, when to plant and the number of plants needed for an area 20 feet by 20 feet?

As long as you are in a growing area that is not colder than zone 5, the English chamomile would be your best choice. The best time to plant is in the spring and 20 by 20 feet (6.5 by 6.5 meters) need to be planted on 6 inch (15 cm) centres and you therefore need about 1600 plants. If this is too expensive you could buy seed of the ordinary flowering type of Roman chamomile and either seed the area directly, or grow the plants in a nursery bed and transplant when they have grown into sizable plants. Further information on possible choices of plants for a herbal lawn are found on our webpage at www.richters.com under the "Q&A" heading in the "News & Info" section of the site. Click on "Search Question & Answers" and type in "ground cover", to find the topics that sound as if they would answer your question.
