Growing Patchouli in Florida

I have been dying to get some patchouli plants and pretty much cover my lawn with them but I’m not quite sure if it would grow okay in my zone 9. I was also wondering; I have a huge tree in my yard, where my yard gets very little sun and was thinking about planting there if they would grow. Would it be alright to grow patchouli in my zone? Would it be okay to plant them where they rarely get any sun? How well do they get along with other plants?

Unfortunately, patchouli is a tropical plant and would not survive out of doors in Florida. It even sulks in our cool (about 45F or 7C) greenhouses over the winter. It also does not like full sun, so keeping it under a tree during the warm part of the year would suit it just fine. I would suggest that you plant it in planters and place them where you can enjoy them the most and mass them on your windowsills in the winter. It will make winter seem much more pleasant, since the same plants distributed in a yard will seem so much denser crammed indoors!
