Echinacea Culture in Central West Florida

I have an Echinacea purpurea that was in the ground, in the shade; it has not grown one iota. No new leaves; it has one leaf. Before the cold set in I put it in a large pot in the sun porch. It is getting light but not much direct sun. I have not fertilized it & wonder about putting alfalfa meal lightly on it. It has a good root system & I would like it to flourish. I probably bought it last spring.

The plant needs winter chilling to resume growth. Put the pot out of doors on an-above freezing day and leave it there for the winter. Since the plant is winter hardy to zone 3 leaving it in a pot out of doors in zone 9 is quite safe. Just don’t let it dry out or get soggy wet. Add the alfalfa in the spring.
