I recently read that lavender essential oil is good for carpal tunnel and tennis elbow, just rub in a couple of drops twice a day. Can you tell me about lavender essential oil, and why this makes the pain go away?

We have not heard of this use for lavender oil. Here is what Valerie Ann Worwood, author of "The Complete Book of Essential Oils and Aromatherapy" (available from Richters) says about lavender oil:

"Lavender is capable of many important jobs and is a delight to use. Every home should have a bottle of lavender, if no other oil, because it is so very effective in the treatment of burns and scalds. Lavender oil is a natural antibiotic, antiseptic, antidepressant, sedative, and detoxifier which promotes healing and prevents scarring, and also stimulates the immune system and contributes to the healing process by stimulating the cells of a wound to regenerate more quickly."

According to Deni Bown, author of "Encyclopedia of Herbs & Their Uses" (available from Richters), lavender is also useful externally for such ailments as rheumatism, muscular pain, and neuralgia.

Whether lavender oil is useful for Carpal Tunnel Syndrome and tennis elbow we cannot say; but lavender’s wide range of usefulness suggests that it may be worth trying. As always, it is important to consult a trained health care practitioner for medical advice on your particular condition.
