Do you have any recommendations or treatments for bad breath?

Bad breath is usually caused by bacteria in teeth and gums, but may also be caused by liver, intestinal or kidney problems. Regular brushing, flossing and a herbal mouthwash can help to avoid mouth bacteria. If the problem persists, consult your medical practitioner.

For a herbal mouthwash, James Duke, in "The Green Pharmacy" (available at Richters) recommends steeping a combination of herbs in vodka. Duke suggests putting several ounces of herbs per pint of vodka in a wide-mouth jar with a screw-on lid. For use as a mouthwash, the herbs may be left in the bottle, or strained out after steeping for several days. The herbs that Duke recommends are any combination of: Cardamom seeds, crushed Eucalyptus leaves, fresh Parsley, Anise seeds, fresh Coriander, fresh dill or dill seeds, Peppermint, Sage, Wild bergamot, and clove.

Any of these herbs may also be made into a tea that can be used as a mouthwash, by steeping one or two teaspoons of the herb in a cup of boiling water for 10 - 15 minutes.
