I am writing about my brother-in-law who has very poor eyesight that they (the doctors) said was caused from high blood pressure. He wasn’t taking his medicine and he lost his eyesight. They said that he has optic neuritis. We were wondering if any herbs could help his problem.
In high blood pressure, both general blood circulation and the peripheral circulation, including circulation to the eyes, are adversely affected. It is important to support both general circulation, with herbs like garlic, hawthorn berry and ginger, and peripheral circulation. Bilberry tincture or fresh or frozen blueberries are the best support for peripheral circulation to the eyes. Blueberries are rich in flavonoids which strengthen the blood vessels in the area of the eye, are anti-inflammatory and healing. Blueberries may be eaten freely. About one cup a day is recommended. The unsweetened, frozen berries are at least as effective as the fresh.
In optic neuritis, inflammation or deterioration of the optic nerve, support the growth of new nerve fibres with German chamomile (for inflammation) as a tea or tincture, oats, taken as oatstraw tea or porridge oats, and vitamin B complex. Externally, pour a bit of boiling water over two chamomile tea bags. Remove the bags immediately, and when cooled to room temperature, place over the eyes for 20 minutes. Three times daily.
Palming strengthens the eyes by resting them by keeping them free from light. Sit comformably and relax. Close your eyes and cover them with your hands so that no light gets in. Rest the heel of your palms on your cheekbones and cross your hands on your forehead. Don’t press against your eyeballs and make sure your eyelids, eyebrows and the rest of your eye region is relaxed. Rest in this position for about 20 minutes, three or more times daily.
