I am looking for natural help for dry mouth. I am doing research for a friend and found your site. Her dry mouth began around/during menopause. She can not take any sort of estrogen because of a previous condition. Is there a natural way to increase her saliva production?

Pilocarpine jaborandi is a Brazilian herb that works well for dry mouth. You can read more about this herb and other herbs for dry mouth on the website http://vitabluenc.mothernature.com/Library/Bookshelf/Books/41/45.cfm. This is a section from James Duke’s book "The Green Pharmacy Herbal Handbook", a book that is available at Richters. Pilocarpine has now been developed as a drug that is widely used in dry mouth conditions.

Slippery elm bark powder is soothing for a dry mouth. It is very mucilaginous, protecting the mouth and intestinal tract from acids, inflammation and ulceration. It can be taken as a powder, mixed in foods like cereals, mixed in a bit of water, or it can be taken as a lozenge. It should be taken at least three times daily. The powder and lozenges are available at health food stores. This is a nutritive herb with no negative side effects.
