I’m looking for a variety of lavender which will grow in houston, texas AND in our scorching direct summer sun AND will bloom for as long as possible. I’d like to use it as a border, and if there’s not a variety which blooms pretty close to year round what else might you suggest?
Most lavenders flower in the summer, but not year round. I don’t know of one that blooms year round. However the plants make fine borders even without flowers. The varieties that would be able to survive your summers depend on where you live in Texas. The Texan climate varies from Zone 6 in the north to Zone 9 in the south. All the lavenders will be fine in Zones 6-8, but only Twickle, Fernleaf, French, Grosso, Spanish, Spanish Grey will be OK in Zone 9. For almost year-round bloom in Zone 8-9 you might like to try Austrian Geraniums or annuals such as Calendula and Dwarf Nasturtium. Keep them watered though!
