How Many Herbs Exist?

I have a question I thought you might be able to answer. About roughly how many different types of herbs exist? I would greatly appreciate your response and help.

I am often heard saying that there are as many herbs as there are different kinds of plants – about 200,000 to 300,000. We believe that every plant has some special virtue which in most cases is still to be discovered. However, of the herbs that are important to man for medicine, aromatic uses, and for flavouring food – i.e. those important enough to be in the commercial trade – there are about two to three thousand herbs.

I love your website. It is very convenient and well structured. Love it!

Glad you like it. It is a real labour of love for all of us at Richters.
