Chinese Arborvitae
Platycladus orientalis
Uses: Medicinal/Culinary Duration: Perennial (hardy in zones 6-10)
When to Sow: Spring/Late Summer/Early Fall Ease of Germination: Moderate
(Ce bai; Oriental arborvitae) A beautiful evergreen from China that is widely planted as a landscaping tree in the United States. It closely resembles cedar with strongly aromatic leaves. It has been used in Chinese medicine for thousands of years for its "blood-cooling" and hemostatic properties. The leaves are traditionally used to treat baldness, excessive phlegm, flu, cough, hemorrhages, and rheumatoid arthritis. Many of these uses are supported by modern pharmacological studies; for example, a simple decoction of the leaves promotes hair growth by increasing the number and size of hair follicles. Chinese arborvitae thrives in full sun any well-drained soil, and unlike the native white cedar, it tolerates drought. Needs shelter from strong winds. Slow growing. Seeds need 30-45 days of cold stratification to germinate. Ht. 8-12m (25-40ft).
