When to Sow: Spring Ease of Germination: Easy
(Da ye zui yu cao; Wine medicine flower) A hugely attractive Chinese shrub used to dispel wind and cold, to treat cough, bronchial problems, bruises, fractures, and ulcers, and as an eyewash for pink eye. Its anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties make it useful for rheumatoid arthritis and for skin problems such as acne, eczema and pruritis. Studies show that it blocks the cytokines that lead to inflammation and pain. Used in skin care products to protect UVA damage, breakdown of collagen, and to boost the skin’s natural self-repair functions. A syrup made from the incredibly fragrant flowers is excellent for sleep and rest -- just a teaspoon or two is enough. Masses of violet-blue flowers from July to October are intensely fragrant and a magnet for butterflies, bees, hummingbirds and other pollinators. Thrives in full sun and in most soils, even poor soils. Drought tolerant. Ht. 120-180cm/4-6ft.
