When to Sow: Spring/Late Summer/Early Fall Ease of Germination: Difficult/Special Treatment Required
Found extensively in the prairies and towering to up to 8 feet in height, this is a really fascinating plant. Its name comes from the tendency of its leaves to lie on the north south axis, which helps it optimize photosynthesis while avoiding damage from hot temperatures. Some say it aided pioneers in their travels. The Native American tribes discovered the breath sweetening effect when the amber resin is chewed. Resin is also known to be a diuretic. Roots hold properties which help relieve pulmonary complains such as coughing and asthma. Plant in full sun and medium soil. Drought resistant. Pollinator friendly.
