(Cardinal vine) Vine with attractive scarlet flowers and wispy needle-like leaves. It is a magnet for hummingbirds and butterflies. Widely cultivated worldwide and has become naturalized in many areas. Mildly invasive as seedlings can pop up where they are unwanted but they won‘t crowd out native plants. Traditionally, the leaves are used for physical weakness, cuts and wounds, piles, carbuncles and hemorrhoids. Extracts have been shown to possess significant anticancer and antidiabetic effects.
