This native of East Asia has been used in traditional Chinese medicine for almost 2000 years. The root is an important remedy for conditions caused by "wind-cold dampness" such as rheumatic joint stiffness and headache. It has analgesic and anti-inflammatory properties and it is widely used to treat rheumatoid arthritis. The root is also used to combat brain aging and dementia and studies confirm that it improves learning and memory. Prefers moist rich well-drained soil in full sun or dappled shade. Removing flowers to prevent seed formation extends the life of plants. Ht. 1.5-2.5m (5-7ft).
