(Gravelroot) Tall low maintainer native of the eastern United States with showy rosy-purple flowers that offer a source of nectar for Monarchs, Swallowtails and other butterfly species. Leaves emit a vanilla-scent when crushed. Appeared in a publication in 1840 where it was described as a useful remedy for “gravel” (kidney stones). Said to have been named after a Native American medicine man named Joe Pye who used this herb to resolve fevers. Thrives in semi-shaded woodlands. Height 4-6 feet.
