Uses: Culinary/Medicinal Duration: Annual or Biennial (hardy in zones 6)
When to Sow: Spring Ease of Germination: Easy
(Ye kui) Edible plant with traditional use as a medicinal herb. The leaves are tender and make a very nice alternative to lettuce in salads. The flavour is mild and very pleasant—compared to lettuce, it produces an abundance of leaves for the taking. Seeds too are edible; can be cooked or eaten raw. When green and immature they have a nice nutty taste, though they are a bit of a chore to harvest. Medicinally, the plant contains a soothing mucilage, is anti-inflammatory and has laxative properties.
