Once common from Florida to the Great Lakes, wild pawpaw became almost extinct. But there is renewed interest in this, North Americas largest native fruit. The yellow fruits form in hanging clusters somewhat like bananas and have a sweet custard-like flesh with an exotic mango-banana like flavour. They are a challenge to grow from seeds, and take a few years to get established, but they are well worth the effort. Two or more plants are needed for pollination.
