(Chinese tree peony; Mudan) The famous moutan peony has been cultivated for over 2000 years in China, where it is the "King of Flowers" and a symbol of wealth and good fortune. The root bark clears heat, cools blood, increases blood circulation, and opposes stasis. It is analgesic, sedative, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and antimicrobial. Studies have shown that it interferes with the accumulation of amyloid proteins in the brain which is associated with Alzheimer’s disease. In mice it blocks amyloid deposition in the brain and improves long-term memory at the same time. Does best in deep rich soil in sun or light shade. Seeds require warm and cold stratification and can take 18 months to germinate. Ht. 1-1.5m (3-5ft).
