Mexican Rue
Ruta chalepensis
Uses:
Medicinal
Duration:
Perennial
(hardy in zones 6-10)
(Fringed rue; Ruda) First brought to Mexico after the Spanish Conquest, this Mediterranean plant became naturalized throughout the country and firmly embedded in herbal folklore. It is used for digestive problems such as stomach pain, worms, constipation, nausea, diarrhea, and flatulence. Women use it to tonify the uterus, regulate menstruation, and promote lactation -- and know to avoid it when pregnant. Externally it is used for venous insufficiency, varicose veins, hemorrhoids, wounds and skin ulcers. It is also a spiritual remedy for
mal aire
("bad air") which is believed to come from the dead, causing loss of appetite, sweating, jaundice, and ringing in the ears. Smudging the afflicted from head to toe with a bundle of rue and other herbs is said to expel the
mal aire
. Has antioxidant, antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory and antispasmodic properties.
