Peruvian Sage
Salvia discolor
Uses: Aromatic Duration: Perennial (hardy in zones 9-10)
A lesser known unique Peruvian native sage that strays from its relatives bright and cheery coloured blooms, and instead, produces indigo flowers so dark, they almost appear black! Two lipped flowers create a contrast as they emerge from velvety gray-green calyces. This is not a culinary sage, but is appreciated for its complex fruity aroma that smells exactly like black currants! Salvia discolor benefits from a trellis or other structural support, as its scandent, sprawling stems can reach up to 80cm in length. Alternatively looks wonderful in containers as the stems will cascade over the edges. Thrives in full sun in well drained soil and is known to be drought tolerant.
