(American apple mint; Red mint) This variety is one of the main contributers the American mint oil industry, primarily used to flavour chewing gum. Spearmint M. Spicata was originally introduced into the United States in the 1800s for oil production, up until the discovery of Scotch Spearmint in a Wisconsin garden in 1908, originating from Scotland. Production spread to Alberta and Saskatchewan in 1990 and is still widely cultivated today. It is the flavouring in the well known British Scotchmint candies. Very attractive, with maroon stems and variegated green and cream leaves. Produces small lilac flowers along its stems. Like all mints, Scotch Spearmint will grow almost anywhere, with potential to become invasive. For this reason, containing in pots is typically a good idea.
