South African native succulent, also known as bitter aloe, grown for commercial use of its medicinal compounds. Similar to aloe vera but more suitable for internal concerns rather than topical use. Acts as a strong laxative, primarily due to the anthraquinone glycoside, barbaloin present in the latex, the inner lining of its leaves. There is also research suggesting its effectiveness against tumors while strengthening the immune system. Also an ingredient of the ‘Swedish Bitters’ popularized by European herbalist Maria Treben formulated as a digestive aid. Height 10 feet.
