Uses: Medicinal Duration: Perennial (hardy in zones 3-8)
When to Sow: Spring/Late Summer/Early Fall Ease of Germination: Easy
(Lady’s bedstraw) As its name implies, it was used historically as stuffing material for mattresses. Produces bright yellow flowers. Red dyes are extracted from its roots while the tops are a source of yellow dye. Traditionally, Yellow Bedstraw was grown for its ability to curdle milk and act as cheese rennet while adding a familiar yellow-orange colouring. Recent research by Schmidt et al (2014) has supported Galium verums traditional use as an anticancer remedy, as it demonstrated DNA protection against benzapyrene, a toxic compound in cigarette smoke. Sow in loose, moist soil, rich in organic matter. Ht 12-18in (30-45cm).
