Betony
Stachys officinalis
Uses: Medicinal/Beverage/Industrial Duration: Perennial (hardy in zones 4-8)
When to Sow: Spring/Late Summer/Early Fall Ease of Germination: Easy
A bushy plant that produces purple lavender-like purple blooms that flower from June to August; especially attractive to pollinators. Used historically as a remedy for headaches and nervous tension. This is due to its strong alkaloid content which works directly on the nervous system. This, in combination with its muscle relaxing properties make it useful for sleep problems. It has astringent qualities which allow it to speed up wound healing and control swelling when used topically. Its astringency helps to treat diarrhea and mouth sores. It has also been studied for its antioxidant properties. When brewed, the leaves make a pleasant caffeine-free substitute for black tea in both flavour and colour. Betony does not require much maintenance and is deer and rabbit resistant. Prefers full sun to partial shade in loamy, chalky or sandy well drained soil. Sow into well-drained soil, and keep moist. Drought tolerant. Height 2ft.
