Cat’s Claw
Uncaria tomentosa
Uses: Medicinal
(Uña de gato) Legendary cancer cure sourced from the bark of this woody vine, grown for a minimum of 8 years before harvesting. Naturally found in the jungles of the Amazon rainforest and named after the hook like thorns resembling cats claws. Can grow up to 100ft tall, climbing up neighbouring trees. The Ashininkas of Peru are the largest commercial producers as it plays a huge role in local medicine and ceremonial practices. Inner bark has been used for over 2000 years for ailments involving the immune system and the inflammatory pathway, with indications including cancer, arthritis, rheumatism and gastric ulcers. Although the direct mechanism in which it prevents cancer is still not fully understood, it is believed that it has to do with its ability to both protect the DNA from damage, stimulating the immune system and inducing cancer cells to undergo programmed cell death. Has also been shown to be an antiviral effective against HSV 1 & 2. Formulated into teas, tinctures and capsules.
