Cranberry
Vaccinium macrocarpon
Uses: Medicinal
The cranberry is, of course, a main ingredient of traditional holiday sauces served at Thanksgiving and Christmas. Rich in vitamin C and pleasantly tart when cooked, its place on the holiday dinner table is sacred. But the cranberry is also an important medicinal herb. It helps fight urinary tract infections and this effect has been proven scientifically. A 2010 clinical study published in Molecular Nutrition and Food Research found that cranberry is a safe and effective treatment for urinary tract infections, preventing the bacteria from adhering to the bladder wall, allowing the body to flush out infections easily. Cranberry can be taken as a daily preventative, or in conjunction with antibiotics to speed healing. Other studies have found it combats gingivitis and stomach ulcers by much the same mechanism, making it prophylactic for those conditions as well.
