(Chinese snake gourd; Gualou) One of the 50 fundamental herbs of Chinese traditional medicine. The orange-yellow round fruits help clear thoracic obstructions by promoting the flow of chi (qi). They are used for lung infections, shortness of breath, and to clear phlegm. A soup made with the fruits is traditionally taken in winter for colds and flus. They are also used to relieve chest pain, improve blood flow, and to prevent coronary heart disease and angina. Many studies confirm the fruit’s powerful effects on vascular health. While the fruits are safe to use, and are edible, the roots can be toxic and are used only under medical supervision. Climbing vine, up to 6m (20ft). Prefers rich, moist, well-drained soil with full sun exposure. Start early indoors as it needs a long growing season.
