Damiana
Turnera diffusa
Uses: Culinary/Medicinal/Beverage Duration: Perennial (hardy in zones 11+)
Leaves have a lemon scent that persists faintly when dried. Tiny golden flowers blossom in early to late summer, followed by small fruits with a taste like figs. The dried leaves are steeped and strained away to make a tea that is thought to be helpful in producing calm and relaxation. Damiana is reputed to be an aphrodisiac for both sexes, but especially for women. Native to Mexico and South America, it is the primary flavouring in the Guadalajara liqueur called Damiana, and is used in margaritas.
