Ice Crystal Fig
Ficus carica 'Ice Crystal'
Uses: Culinary/Medicinal Duration: Perennial (hardy in zones 7-10)
Beautiful fig for containers! The deeply divided leaves give this fig a dazzling geometrical look that somehow brings to mind the intricate shapes of ice crystals and snowflakes. The Royal Horticultural Society was so impressed with this fig as an ornamental that it awarded it the prestigious Award of Garden Merit. When grown in decorative clay containers, it adds a nice Mediterranean feel to patios, terraces and balconies.
This type of fig is called a "Smyrna" fig. While it does produce edible figs, it can only do so in the presence of a male "capri" fig and a specific pollinator wasp found only in the Mediterranean and in California. Elsewhere, this fig will not produce figs and can only be grown for its unique ornamental value.
