Rose de Lautrec Garlic
Allium sativum ophioscordon 'Rose de Lautrec'
Uses: Culinary/Medicinal Duration: Perennial (hardy in zones 3-8)
When to Sow: Late Summer/Early Fall
It is believed that this rare variety appeared in the Middle Ages when a penniless traveler passing through Lautrec, in southern France, paid for dinner at the local tavern with bulbs of this rose-pink garlic. The innkeeper planted the cloves, launching a wave of popularity throughout the region that persists today. There is an annual fair in Lautrec that is dedicated to just this garlic! And why not? This beautiful garlic has a unique gentle, sweet flavour profile. Another unique thing: the bulbs are traditionally arranged into "manouilles", or clusters of bulbs with stems tied together, rather than the usual garlic braids. 10 cloves per bulb.
