Uses: Medicinal/Industrial Duration: Perennial (hardy in zones 10-12)
When to Sow: Anytime Ease of Germination: Difficult
Antidepression herb from Africa. Seeds are an important source of 5-hydroxytryptophan (5-HTP), a precursor of seratonin, a brain neurotransmitter that directly affects depression and other conditions. Griffonia extracts are used to treat depression, insomnia, obesity, jet lag, anxiety, fibromyalgia and obsessive-compulsive behaviour. Studies show that the effect of 5-HTP on depression is dramatic. In weight control, 5-HTP removes the craving for carbohydrates by boosting serotonin levels in the same way that eating excessive carbohydrates does. The seeds are also a source for lectins used in medical science. In African folklore, the herb is reputed to be an aphrodisiac, as well as an antibiotic and a remedy for diarrhea, vomiting, and stomachache. Woody shrub or climber growing up to 3m (10ft). Seeds require pretreatment to germinate; instructions provided.
