Impatiens capensis
Uses: Medicinal Duration: Annual (hardy in zones 4-8)
When to Sow: Late Summer/Early Fall Ease of Germination: Moderate
North American woodland plant with distinctive orange-yellow pendant-like flowers. Juice or freshly crushed leaves are effective for the treatment of poison ivy. When applied liberally to affected skin, it works almost immediately to soothe and help to reduce the itchy rash caused by poison ivy’s irritant oils. Juice of plant can be added to soaps to make an effective poison ivy-fighting soap. Often grows in the same area as poison ivy, but it’s handy to grow a patch of jewelweed just to be sure! Prefers moist, shady locations with rich soil. Ht.1m/3-4ft.
