Silver Carpet Lamb’s Ear
Stachys byzantina 'Silver Carpet'
Uses: Medicinal Duration: Perennial (hardy in zones 4-9)
So soft you can’t resist stepping on it barefoot! Non-flowering form of lamb’s ear, excellent as a low ground cover. Has soft, downy foliage that feels and looks like real lamb’s ears. One of 34 species in the genus Stachys from Iran which have been collectively used as an antibacterial, antitumour, antiinflammatory agent along with many other applications. Because of its soft texture, it has been historically used to bandage wounds. Thrives in average soil in full sun but appreciates some afternoon shade in hot climates. Looks great as an edging, along walkways, massed as a groundcover and in rock gardens. Sensitive to overwatering and stagnant conditions and prone to root rot.
