Hidcote Lavender
Lavandula angustifolia 'Hidcote'
Uses: Culinary/Medicinal/Aromatic/Industrial Duration: Perennial (hardy in zones 4-8)
When to Sow: Spring/Late Summer/Early Fall Ease of Germination: Difficult/Special Treatment Required
One of the most adored varieties for its hardiness and beautiful deep purple blossoms which attract pollinators and provide a pleasing aroma throughout its long flowering season. A compact variety with silver green foliage that looks wonderful in rock gardens, borders, containers and as mass plantings. Can be used for potpourri, and sachets and holds its colour, making it ideal for crafts. Like any other variety, Hidcote Lavender must be located in full sun and planted in well drained alkaline sandy soil, ideally in a raised bed or rock garden as they are prone to root rot if conditions are too wet. Perfect for borders, rock gardens and containers. After the second year of growth, begin pruning once or twice a year, cutting back a third of its foliage. This will help maintain their shape, leaf and flower production as well as prevent woodyness. May need insulation with mulch or leaves over the winter. Resistant to drought, deer and rabbits. Ht. 12 inches.
