Fernleaf Lavender
Lavandula multifida
Uses: Medicinal/Aromatic Duration: Perennial (hardy in zones 9-11)
When to Sow: Spring/Anytime Ease of Germination: Moderate
Unique for its delicate, lacy fern like leaves, this variety produces long stems adorned with fragrant blue-violet trident shaped flowers that bloom all summer long. Tolerates wet conditions more that other varieties. Perfect for borders, rock gardens, mass plantings and containers although not the preferred choice for culinary use. Fragrance is pungent. Like any other variety, Fernleaf Lavender must be located in full sun and planted in well drained alkaline sandy soil, ideally in a raised bed or rock garden as they are prone to root rot if conditions are too wet. After the second year of growth, begin pruning once or twice a year, cutting back a third of its foliage. This will help maintain their shape, leaf and flower production as well as prevent woodyness. Ht 3 feet.
