French Long Lavender
Lavandula stoechas pedunculata
Uses: Culinary/Medicinal/Aromatic Duration: Perennial (hardy in zones 8-9)
When to Sow: Anytime Ease of Germination: Moderate
(Pedunculata lavender) Similar to the standard variety with its large magenta flower bracts and elongated flower stalks but with a stronger aroma and bushier growth habit! Like others in the stoechas groups, aroma is highlighted by camphor-rosemary overtones, more so than the English variety. Still recognizable as a french lavender by its crown of sterile bracts atop its flower spike. Like any French variety, French long is more cold sensitive than other varieties but has a lengthy blooming season that begins earlier in the season. Plant in full sun and well drained alkaline sandy soil, ideally in a raised bed or rock garden as it is prone to root rot if conditions are too wet. Perfect for borders, rock gardens and containers. Bloom time early as May with a second wave around June followed by a third in late summer or fall. Height up to 75cm/30”.
