Seal Lavender
Lavandula x intermedia 'Seal'
Uses: Culinary/Medicinal/Aromatic/Industrial Duration: Perennial (hardy in zones 5-9)
A favourite for lavender sachets, as the pleasant aroma lasts for about two years! Large bushy growth habit with dark purple-violet flowers that appear on long spikes. Named after its introduction at the English Seal Herb Farm in 1935 where it was once considered to be the best variety for commercial production, both for drying and for oil. Like any other variety, Seal Lavender must be located in full sun and planted in well drained alkaline sandy soil, ideally in a raised bed or rock garden as they are prone to root rot if conditions are too wet. Perfect for borders, rock gardens and containers. After the second year of growth, begin pruning once or twice a year, cutting back a third of its foliage. This will help maintain their shape, leaf and flower production as well as prevent woodyness. Ht. 120cm/4ft.
