Once known as “lettuce opium” or “lactucarium” in the early pharmacopoeias as the white latex looks identical to opium when dried. Preferred medicinal variety from Europe, with the highest latex content. A leafy plant with small bright yellow flowers. Leaves are used to treat insomnia, pain and restlessness as active compounds lactucin and lactucopicrin act on the central nervous system. Is used in treatment combinations for whooping cough as it is an effective antispasmodic. Its spasm relieving properties can also help with digestive colic. Plant in full sun in well drained soil. Height up to 6 feet.
