Leonotis leonurus
Uses: Medicinal Duration: Perennial (hardy in zones 9-10)
(Lion’s ear; Wild dagga) Like motherwort, Leonotis leonurus is a lamiaceae (mint). It is characterized by tall shoots, and leaping assemblies of orange lions tail blooms. Flowers are bright and known to draw in hummingbirds. A captivating miniature tree that can be potted indoors or out. Lions tail is native to South Africa, where local tribespeople have traditionally applied parts of this plant to snake bites as well as using it for stomach issues, epilepsy, bronchial problems and many more ailments. It has been researched for its anticonvulsant activity, suggesting future research into its medicinal value. Its folk use as an antiparasitic has recently been demonstrated in a study observing antihelminthic actions on parasitic eggs. Today, this plant is mainly used medicinally for menstrual pain. A calming tea can be brewed from its leaves although caution should be taken as high concentrations of its constituent leonine can be toxic. Lions tail is resilient, suitable for xeriscaping, self-seeding even in drier conditions. Requires at least 6 hours of sun per day. Growth improves with ample water, pruning, and soil fertility.
