(Cardinal flower) Native to eastern and southern U.S. and Canada, this perennial blooms into a splash of brilliant red flower spikes in autumn that are adored by hummingbirds and butterflies. Thrives in disturbed, rich, moist soils; can be found in damp and partially shaded woodland, wetland and low lying meadows. Said to have been used by the Delaware, Iroquois, and Cherokee tribes for many ailments including stomach pain, parasites and epilepsy. Careful, as this plant is poisonous to humans and pets. Poisoning is characterized by depression, confusion, irregular heart rhythm, vomiting and abdominal pain. Deer and rabbit resistant. Sow in rich, moist soil. Thrives in morning sun and evening shade. Ht 3-4 ft; spread 1.5-2ft.
