A small tree growing up to 6m/20ft in height. The seeds are considered poisonous but are used in traditional medicine in Mexico to treat gastrointestinal distress caused by pathogens. The seeds are ground and boiled in water. The seeds are also used to treat intestinal worms, chest pain, cough, and cancer. The species is endangered as most of the wild stands have been destroyed. Trade in wood and bark products is prohibited but not the sale of seeds.
