(Ye kui) Edible plant with traditional use as a medicinal herb. The leaves are tender and make a very nice alternative to lettuce in salads. The flavour is mild and very pleasant. Compared to lettuce, a plant like this with abundant leaves for the taking makes a lot more sense for gardens. The seeds too are edible; when green and immature they have a nice nutty taste and can be cooked or eaten raw though they are a bit of a chore to harvest. Medicinally, the plant contains mucilage and is used for its soothing, anti-inflammatory and laxative properties.
