(Chilean wineberry) Super source of antioxidants! The tasty, almost black purple berries possess perhaps the highest levels of antioxidants in the plant world. Since the early 2000s when reports of its antioxidant activity first came out, international interest in this shrub from Chile has exploded. The berries slow the progression of cardiovascular disease by preventing the oxidation of cholesterol and the hardening of the arteries. They have potent antidiabetic effects, boosting insulin levels and helping to regulate blood glucose, and studies suggest that they may be better at controlling diabetes than any other plant medicine. Other studies suggest that they are helpful in the treatment of chronic and degenerative disorders such as Alzheimers and cancer. The Mapuche Indians of Chile make a fermented chicha from maqui that was believed to confer unusual strength and stamina to their warriors. They also used the leaves for throat problems, mouth ulcers, tonsillitis, burns, diarrhea, dysentery and pain. Long before maqui berries became known for their health effects, they were widely used in Europe to colour wine. Could they be part of the reason why red wine is thought to be so good for the heart? Hmmm...
